Similar to X. pfaendleri, the natural habitats are sandy banks of (semi-)natural rivers and lakes with sparse vegetation up to 200 m asl. Nowadays it is mainly found in artificial ponds and pools in sand and gravel pits, fish ponds etc., where it prefers wet banks with fine sediment such as sand, clay and silt with a low vegetation cover.
Abundance
This molehopper has fragmented distribution only in Pannonian area of Slovakia. In its sites is very abundant, frequently occurring with the sister species X. pfaendleri.
